For the inquiry about HIV/AIDS in South Africa, I would
suggest logging into and downloading the latest "international HIV/AIDS
database" from the following website:

http://www.census.gov/ipc/www/hivaidsn.html

Upon searchig this excellent database for individual summaries
by country for reported rates of HIV infection, if one hits the F9 key, the
citations to each datum will appear. I then suggest performing an
AIDSLINE literature search on the authors to uncover other reports from
South Africa (as well as searching AIDSLINE for the keyword "South
Africa").

Also, the new book, "AIDS in the World II", has a good
summary for Africa on pages 28-35 (Mann J, Tarantola D, eds., New
York/Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1996).

A more complete and up-to-date summary for Africa is
contained in the 61-page "Final Report: The Status and Trends of the
Global HIV/AIDS Pandemic, July 5-6, 1996." This document resulted
from a workshop in Vancouver organized by the AIDSCAP programt of
Family Health International, by the F-X Bagnoud Center for Health and
Human Rights at the Harvard School of Public Health, and by UNAIDS.
I believe copies are available in English, French, and Spanish from
AIDSCAP/FHI, 2101 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington, Virginia 22201 USA,
fax [1](703)516-9781. I don't know; perhaps it is also posted on the
internet.
