[Mod. From SEA-AIDS]
The SKAN Foundation in Chiang Mai, Northern Thailand has been involved
in action oriented research, supporting and examining the process of
PWA Network development for the past several years. The research team
has established trusting relations with many local PWA groups to
discuss strategies for self care and support from the local community
and national government. Researchers have also been involved in
documenting the process of marginalized, individuals who have
contracted AIDS and how they become linked to PWA groups, as well as
how small PWA groups network together to form a larger regional
network.
We are interested in how other countries have been involved in
re-building or maintaining a sense of community as AIDS spreads into
the family and community, how fear and separation is transformed into
acceptance and support. For example, In Northern Thailand, we have
observed the role of Buddhist monks in caring for PWAs. A few
progressive monks have managed to create hospices at their WAT/Temple
to provide Dharma Teachings, care and treatment, and economic
opportunities to continue being part of the community.
