"Tanzania: AIDS Threatens Agricultural Workforce"
Africa Information Afrique (09/06/97); Kasumuni, Ludger
The rapid spread of HIV through rural Tanzania has
significantly depleted the country's agricultural work force and
left the remaining workers under great financial strain. Charles
Tullah, a planning officer with the ministry of agriculture and
livestock development, says AIDS now kills about 8,000 farm
workers a year. Gaudio Tibakwitira, executive director of
WAMATA, a non-governmental organization that focuses on HIV/AIDS
awareness campaigns, cites increased interaction between urban
and rural areas as a key factor in the spread of HIV. According
to the National Aids Control Program, some 800,000 Tanzanians are
now infected with HIV, and at its current rate of growth, that
figure is expected to reach 2.4 million by the year 2000.
