"Argentine AIDS Patients Stage Drug Shortage Sit-In"
Reuters (09/16/97)
Argentine AIDS patients and their families have occupied one
floor of the Health Ministry in Buenos Aires since Tuesday to
protest delays in supplies of free drugs. The group, comprising
nearly 100 people, says it will not leave until top officials
listen to the patients' complaints. Patients also expressed
concern that delays in delivery of their medications had worsened
their condition, making HIV more likely to resist drug treatment.
Health Minister Alberto Mazza denied that patients were not
receiving the drugs in a timely fashion, but he also noted that
the government would triple its AIDS treatment budget to $65
million next year.
