"Health -- Argentina: Women Most at Risk for AIDS"
IPS Wire (09/17/97)
Young wives in Argentina are most at risk for HIV infection,
health experts say, despite widespread belief among the
population that the disease is a problem for men. According to
figures presented at a safer sex seminar in Buenos
Aires--organized by the Foundation for Research on Women--63
percent of poor women in Argentina are unaware of basic facts
regarding HIV protection. Many of the wives admitted that they
ask their husbands to wear condoms when they go out, but they do
not protect themselves when they have sex with their husbands.
"In Argentina, like in many other countries, the rate of
infection among women is increasing rapidly," said Mabel Bianco,
president of the Foundation for Research on Women. "In 1988, for
every 14 men who contracted AIDS, one woman would become
infected. By 1994, it was one woman for every four men."
