"Western Pacific Can Avoid Worst of AIDS, Says UN"
Reuters (09/23/97)
Dr. Peter Piot, head of the United Nations Joint Program on
HIV/AIDS, says that Western Pacific countries, including China,
Japan, and Vietnam, have the opportunity to avoid the worst of
the HIV/AIDS epidemic. In a Tuesday address to the World Health
Organization's regional committee for the Western Pacific, Piot
noted: "This region has a better chance of avoiding the
African-type epidemic of HIV cases than any other." The reason,
he explained, is the attitude that these governments have adopted
in fighting the virus--an attitude that results from "a
combination of seeing what's going on in near neighbors like
Thailand and India ... [and] advocacy from groups like the UN and
non-government organizations." China and Vietnam have both shown
a commitment at senior political levels to fight the spread of
HIV, Piot said, but governments must ensure the effort is
maintained with adequate funding.
