(Please respond directly to the program as indicated below - Mod.)

1. TAKEMI PROGRAM CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR FELLOWSHIPS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------

Takemi Program in International Health Fellowships at the Harvard School of Public Health
The Takemi Program seeks applications for a limited number of fellowships for research and
advanced training on critical issues of international health, especially those relating to
developing countries.

This interdisciplinary program focuses primarily on mobilizing, allocating, and managing
scarce resources to improve health, and creating sound strategies for disease control and
health promotion. To address these issues, the Program brings together at Harvard a small
group of future leaders from around the world and from diverse disciplines. Through its
fellowships for highly qualified individuals the Takemi Program seeks to contribute to
institutional development and to improvement of national health policy as well as to the
advancement of knowledge.

The Program is named for the late Dr. Taro Takemi, the distinguished physician-scientist,
who served for more than 25 years as President of the Japan Medical Association. Dr.
Takemi also worked energetically to encourage people from many nations to address common
issues, particularly the development and allocation of resources for health improvement.

The Takemi Program has three major objectives:

- to create better methods for mobilizing and using health resources in both rich and poor
countries;
- to promote cooperative research and comparative analysis of health policies and programs
in different countries, including the promotion of Essential National Health Research;
- to contribute to individual and institutional development by bringing together leading
health professionals and scholars from many nations for research and training.

If you are interested in applying, please contact us by e-mail, fax, or letter.
Deadline for applications: Feb. 1, 2001.

2. INTERNATIONAL FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAM - FORD FOUNDATION
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
-------------

The Ford Foundation expects to fund 350 master's and doctoral students each year with what
is being billed as the foundation's largest single grant - the new International
Fellowships Program (IFP).

The IFP Fellowship will provide access to higher education to citizens of countries that
typically lack broad access to such opportunities. In 2001, the program will begin by
admitting citizens of Nigeria, Senegal, Ghana, Vietnam, Chile, Peru, and Russia, but it
will expand to include many more countries in 2002.

Fellows may study anywhere in the world, including the United States, but must return to
their home country upon the conclusion of their fellowship to apply their newly learned
skills.

According to Joan Dassin, Director of the IFP Program, there are no restrictions on what
fellows may study, but the topic must be related to a problem in their home country.
Biomedical research is permitted, but it is up to the fellow to justify how training in
this discipline would be of practical value to their homeland.

Watch the foundation's web site for details on a related undergraduate initiative, which
provides funds for institutions in disadvantaged countries. Eligibility: Individuals must
have baccalaureate degrees and must be citizens of eligible countries.

Applicants must demonstrate leadership ability and commitment to their communities.

Funds: The amount of individual stipends "will vary greatly depending on where [fellows]
study", a total of US$ 280 million will be spent over the next ten years by the
Foundation.

Deadline: Deadlines will vary depending on country of origin, but common deadlines will be
established soon.
