Third Conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV Transmission Developing
Country Scholarship Program
==============================================
The "Third Conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV Transmission from
Mothers to Infants," to be held September 9-13, 2001 in Kampala, Uganda, will focus on the
prevention of the spread of HIV from mothers to their unborn children.
This international meeting is sponsored by the International AIDS Society and the American
Foundation for AIDS research in collaboration with the Office of AIDS Research at the
National Institutes of Health and the Call to Action of the Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric
AIDS Foundation.
The Harvard AIDS Institute is cosponsoring the meeting and coordinates the Developing
Country Scholarship Program. Through the Developing Country Scholarship Program,
scientists, health-care workers, and public health administrators from all over the world
are given the opportunity to participate in this conference.
In 1999, on behalf of the conference organizers, the Harvard AIDS Institute awarded
scholarships to 231 individuals from 37 different developing countries from Argentina to
Zimbabwe to participate in the "Second Conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention
of HIV Transmission from Mothers to Infants" held in Montreal, Canada. Many qualified
individuals requested support, and after a careful review, the scholarship committee
granted awards of varying degrees to all those who applied to the scholarship program.
A limited number of scholarships will be available to individuals from developing
countries to attend the "Third Conference on Global Strategies for the Prevention of HIV
Transmission from Mothers to Infants," and therefore competition will be very fierce.
Preference will be given according to the following priorities:
* Individuals with backgrounds in prevention of mother to child HIV/AIDS transmission,
care and/or treatment.
* Individuals likely to effectively communicate knowledge gained at the conference to
their scientific colleagues and their respective communities.
* Individuals representing diverse professional disciplines and geographic areas most
affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic.
* Individuals who obtain partial support.
* Individuals submitting abstracts.
