The Global Health Council would like to invite you to a briefing on the
United Nations Special Session on HIV/AIDS (UNGASS). From June 25 to 27,
2001, the United Nations General Assembly will convene a special session on
HIV/AIDS in New York. As not all civil society actors have been able to

briefing has been set up to update you on the preparatory process of the
special session and on the role of the US Government and UNAIDS at the
session. Panelists will include:
Peter Piot, Executive Director for UNAIDS
Scott Evertz, Director of the White House Office on National AIDS Policy
Ambassador Michael Southwick, Deputy Assistant Director, International
Organizations, State Department
Paul Delay, HIV/AIDS Division Chief, USAID
Dr. Piot will provide an overview of the process leading up to the Special
Session, an update on the current status of the Declaration of Commitment
and the expected outcome for the Session.
Scott Evertz. Ambassador Southwick and Paul DeLay will lead a discussion on
the U.S. Government participation in the preparations for the Session, the
drafting of the final Declaration of Commitment and the role of the U.S.
delegation for the June Session.
As liaison to the NGO community, Ron MacInnis, USAID, will provide the
participants with information about special US Government/NGO meetings
during the special session in New York.

The Global Health Council
Invites you to attend a Congressional Briefing entitled
"HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean: the Emerging Crisis"
The Mansfield Room, U.S. Capitol
Tuesday, June 19, 2001
8:000 10:00 am
The Caribbean region has the second highest rate of HIV/AIDS
infection in the world. An estimated 360,000 people are currently living
with the disease. HIV/AIDS impacts every sector of this neighboring region.
It is our privilege to host a distinguished panel of experts who will lend
their insights on HIV/AIDS in the Caribbean. In addition to an overview of
the nature of the epidemic in the region, our panelists will draw on their
collective experience working with HIV/AIDS programs to address best
practices, important lessons learned, the importance of developing global
networks, and local capacity building.
The briefing will take place one week prior to the UN General
Assembly's Special Session on HIV/AIDS. Our congressional briefing presents
a perfect opportunity to clarify the unique challenges facing the Caribbean
while the topic of HIV/AIDS is highly visible.
The program will feature the following distinguished panel:
Sir George Allyene, Director of the Pan American Health Organization
Dr. Peter Piot, Executive Director of UNAIDS
Dr. Eddy Génécé, Director of Promoteur Objectif ZeroSida, Haiti
Dr. Martha Butler deLister, National HIV/AIDS Policy Advisor,
