HCC Discussion Update - 11
- Insight Initiative Team, Thailand
*************************************
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you for your participation in the post conference discussion. We have highlighted a
few of the key issues addressed in the area of stigma and care during the conference.
We commenced Theme 3: Enabling environment today and will review the key issues discussed
in this area during the conference.
We asked Dr Sandra Anderson, UNAIDS, South Africa (Insight Initiative: Key Resource
person) for her opinion of the conference coverage and conference itself, to which she
replied:
"The electronic conference coverage makes the content and even the spirit of the event
available to thousands...Perhaps in the future conferences will primarily happen on-line.
Priority fresh topics were the focus for reporting, such as sexual activity of people
living with HIV/AIDS, alternative therapies and healers, the new 30 baht scheme making
antiretrovirals available in Thailand, and the empowering process of designing the field
trips, which were appropriately called empowering visits. More standard topics were also
summarized, such as palliative care and counselling.
The reporting captured the feeling at the conference: that better treatment and
comprehensive care are a reality, and not just a dream. However, this reality, including
access to antiretrovirals, will take lots of hard work and money.
Mr. Phan Wannamethee, Chairman of the 5th HCC, and other leaders, were interviewed and
quoted, for example, mentioning that stigma and discrimination still persist in many
countries. "This social and moral disease has to be eliminated to create an atmosphere of
understanding and love, by especially involving persons living with HIV/AIDS. This is an
area where the Power of Humanity must become a greater reality".
Creating an enabling environment was described and modeled in the empowering visits. The
conference coverage is part of creating ripples to inspire others with this conference
philosophy."
With your valuable contribtions we trust that we will be able to continue to inspire
others in this phase of the HCC discussion.
With best regards
Insight Initiative Team
