The Fifth International Conference on HCC for PLHA: Summary of proceedings presented at
Final Rapporteur Session
Track D: Positive Living: Obstacles to Positive Living
Track Chair: Paul Toh Intercountry Programme Advisor UNAIDS SEAPICT
Definition of the theme " Obstacles to Positive Living"
Stigma and discrimination is still the over-riding factor to living positively.
The direct definition to living positively is 'normalising HIV.' How can society, country
or village normalize an epidemic like HIV?
Normalising HIV means persons living with HIV/AIDS would no longer need to hide their
status and face obstacles to his/her infection in their daily course of their lives.
Normalising HIV means that people within the society can accept HIV/AIDS as another type
of disease that needs attention and sympathy as in cancer and other terminally ill
diseases.
Obstacles to positive living currently included a lack of education and knowledge.
Obstacles to positive living also apply to the affected population instead of just the
infected population.
Why was Track D selected
* Enhance discussion on Stigma and discrimination and its outcome
* To understand from different regions the obstacles faced to positive living
* To understand the meaning of positive living from the perspective of different regions
of the world.
* To hear PLHA's voices of their views on how living can be made more positively with
HIV/AIDS.
Observations from the session for Track D
* 19P4 Living Positively with HIV/AIDS - Plenary Session
* 18D4 Alternative therapy and traditional medicine to normalise HIV
* 18D2 Nutrition and physical exercise requirement Part 1 and 2
* 19D6/Self Acceptance and denial
* 19D9 Long-term non-progression of HIV infection and factors affecting diseases

* 19D13 Hope messages: But my fundamental source of hope is in the good that I try to do.
We are taught in Buddhism that if you do good you receive good. I also know that doing
good makes us stronger and doing evil makes us weaker.
* 19D12 Self care to prevent opportunistic infection
* Multi-sectoral and synergistic approach to support and care for PLHA's (involving
government, NGOs, religious groups and business) Part 1 and 2
I would like to thank my rapporteur team for Track D - Positive Living mainly Stephen
