Subject: One Effect of Reduced ART Cost...

***************************
Dear Colleagues,
Here in the Philippines, we may say that there is accessibility of ARV through doctors
specialized in infectious diseases if you have the money to pay for them. The question
however is the affordability.
Most of those infected come from the middle income and below to the poor class.
I agree with Chris that people are now clamoring to avail ARV, especially those which are
sold at a very much cheaper price (1,500 Philippine peso or $US30 per month) versus the
expensive combination therapy which cost 40,000 Phil peso or $US800/ month.
For those who are now on ARV, based on observation and discussion with PLHAs they have not
developed or addressed their own guidelines at a personal level. In order to lessen bad
effects, PLHAs are in close and constant contact and consultation with their trusted
doctors.
In our case, counseling helps a lot, as well as constant education about treatment. This
has to be done on a regular basis because drugs are not manufactured in the Philippines
and must be imported. This concern puts much stress on the PLHAs, making them worry as to
whether the drugs will arrive in time or would they be placed on a drug holiday which they
did not plan nor voluntarily decide upon. We usually explain to people before they ever
start therapy that they have to remain on the treatment as it may have negative effects on
their health if not taken regularly. In other words, they have to be educated, decide,
adhere and comply to the treatment.
