Dear Colleagues,
The article "Pregnancy May Not Imperil HIV-Negative Prostitutes" appears
to be also a good news for women whose male partners are living with
HIV/AIDS and want to have children. Because of its potential impact on
HIV/AIDS education and public health intervention, I would like to seek
some clarifications in relation to this research:
There is a strong correlation between the prevalence of an infectious
disease and the increased risks of transmission in a defined population.
To date, the proportions of HIV+ among the male clients and sexual
partners of these 98 sex workers, particularly the 54 pregnant women
remain unknown to readers. In such an important scientific research, I
find it is hard to assume the HIV status of a group of men regardless
whether they visit sex workers or not.
Moreover, research in human sexuality and sexual behaviors is always a
fascinating and challenging field. It is known that a combination of
penetrated and unprotected sex has a higher risk of HIV transmission than
non-penetrated and unprotected sex. I am wondering whether any attempt was
made to investigate how many times in which these 98 sex workers actually
had penetrated sex with their clients without using condoms, and any other
"techniques" were used during their sexual encounters with the male
clients in this study period.
There seems to be the needs for a thorough genetic analysis of this
particular strain of HIV (if it has ever been isolated among the clients
in this research), its interaction with the hosts and a better insight
about the immunity characteristics of the women. In the mean time,
perhaps, one would agree that "La Vie en Rose" is a beautiful song, but
not many people can sing it really well. It is vital to continue promoting
the safe sex message.

Good to hear but;
1. Did the said prostitutes had sex with HIV infected men? [assuming it washeterosexual
relationships].
2. If yes to above, how often/long did this un-protected sex with the infected go on??
