HIV/AIDS Palliative Care in Africa
? Richard Harding, HIV/AIDS Bureau, USA.
****************
You may have heard that funds are to be made available to expand HIV/AIDS care in Africa.
We are a group in the United States HIV/AIDS Bureau/Health Resources and Service
Administration interested in the promotion of end-of-life AIDS care, and are currently
undertaking a mapping exercise to further understand current activity in terms of HIV/AIDS
care in Africa. We
aim to publish our findings, with the intention of promoting end-of-life HIV/AIDS care
activities and highlighting examples of good practice, as well as drawing attention to
what providers' see as needed to provide the necessary care.
Our mapping project has in the first instance included funders and NGOs. The organizations
who have participated so far include the AIDS Fund, CDC, Hospice Uganda, SOROS, UNAIDS,
Population Council/Horizons, Catholic Relief Services, the Foundation for Hospices in Sub
Saharan Africa, the Diana Fund and the UK forum for hospice and palliative care worldwide.
We are very keen to include as many care providers in our survey as possible. Your
assistance and knowledge of care in Africa is critical to this mapping project. We have a
brief survey to be completed and faxed or emailed back to the US.
The survey asks about your service, and asks your thoughts about what is needed for the
field. I am very happy to speak on the telephone to anyone who would prefer to be
interviewed in this way. I do hope that you will be able to take a few minutes to complete
this form, and I will of course send a copy of our findings to all those who participate.
I hope to include as many service providers as possible, and intend this to be an
opportunity to promote and develop this area of care.
We are very grateful to any services who are willing to participate. Please contact me so
that I may send a copy to you.
