E-Griot beyond Dakar
- ProCAARE Moderation Team
********************

Griot: In West African tradition, member of the musician-poet caste, custodian/keeper of
oral tradition, storyteller and court-minstrel. "It is customary that the noble speaks
very little and that the griot speaks in his place."

Electronic networking and communication support to the 6th International Home and
Community Care Conference for Persons Living With HIV/AIDS. Dakar, Senegal, December 8 -
11, 2003

E-Griot is a collaborative project between: ·
Health & Development Networks ·
The Conference Organisers: National Council Against AIDS (Senegal), ICASO, ICW, The Red
Cross Federation, GNP+

The goal of the e-Griot Initiative is to enhance the overall benefit and value of the HCC
conference. Specifically, the Initiative has three sets of primary goals:

1. Pre-conference: The e-Griot Initiative will strengthen conference preparations and
fine-tuning of the programme, based on transfer of conclusions from other HIV/AIDS-related
events and meetings. The project will also provide secretariat support to the 6th HCC
International Advisory Committee, assist the Scientific Committee and will promote
awareness about the conference among the HIV/AIDS communities throughout the world.

Specific pre-conference discussions on pertinent topics shall be organised on the ProCAARE
eForum starting June 2003. The same forum shall also publish all relevant conference
announcements.

2. During the conference: Using an electronic networking approach, the e-Griot Initiative
will increase the number of voices and perspectives brought together by the conference. A
team of developing country-based writers (Key Correspondents) will be recruited, trained,
and supervised to provide both pre-conference contributions and conference session
coverage; at least three KCs will be based within Senegal, and there will be a general
emphasis on the Africa region. These reports will be disseminated through all available
channels, including an on-site daily newspaper, the Conference website, the ProCAARE
eForum, other HDN eForums, and various grey literature, newsletters and other
HIV/AIDS-related print media globally.

The e-Griot Initiative will conduct a conference participant evaluation survey and provide
corresponding data analysis/reporting.

3. Post-conference: The e-Griot Initiative will create a permanent electronic record of
the conference proceedings, conclusions and recommendations, and ensure information
content is made available through the Conference web site and eForums in a timely way.

Based on the material written by the KC team, a printed conference report shall also be
published after the conference.

All activities undertaken within the e-Griot Initiative will place special emphasis on
gender aspects of issues related to care.

The Initiative will lead to unprecedented awareness, information exchange and continuity
for HCC conferences, and between the 6th HCC and other HIV/AIDS-related events.
