1. ProCAARE Moderators.
Dear ProCAARE forum members,
We would like to share some thoughts from International Steering Committee members with
you:
* The International Steering Committee for HCC 2003 is committed to specific outcomes per
track.
* We are interested in developing the issues and conclusions from the 2001 Chiang Mai
Conference. We are committed in bringing the Chiang Mai conference agenda forward through
Dakar.
* The concerns from Chiang Mai conference participants are important in this discussion.
What do you think to be the key issues from Chiang Mai?
* Care and prevention go together at the community level.
There is no other international conference for frontline community workers.
Thank you for your contributions!

2.Carla S. Alexander,Baltimore
- Palliative care
Colleagues,
I am very pleased to see that Palliative Care is included on the list of relevant topics.
As ARV therapy moves into new countries it is important to recognize that symptom
anticipation and management have a role in promoting adherence and thus in improving
individual quality of life.
Also for those not able to take these therapies it is equally important to assure that
symptoms are controlled near the end of life and that the dying need to bring a peaceful
closure to their own lives as well as making provision for children left behind.

3. Michael Kiwombojjo, Uganda
- Children in HCC
Friends,
Thanks Sathyanaraynan and Weimner for raising the issue of orphans and children living in
difficult circumstances. Previous conferences including the HCC one in Chiang Mai
surprisingly tended to consider children related issues on HIV/AIDS secondary on the
agenda.
Yet many countries face the blunt of the problem as we are all aware. The case study
cited in India could be a tip of the iceberg.
