Dear All
The theme BETTER CARE chosen for Track 1 forms key to the title of the conference. While
Africa has set standards and demonstrated family and community involvement for relief and
succour to the people living with HIV/AIDS, yet we still fall short of an inter com
amongst the care givers and sharing of best practices couple with some sort of evaluation
to serve as guide posts. Conferences like this provide excellent fora throwing useful
ideas in this regard and learning useful lessons for practical work in this very critical
area.
Chiang Mai did address a lot of regional problems and synthesised critical issues, but the
two-year period is a very long interval for this evolving problem. Hence the need to
address it in the latest contexts.
I have experienced working in HB and CC in Zambia and also closely observed such
programmes in Zimbabwe and Uganda which are indeed very very sound and pioneering
programmes, sparing some thought to evolution of some form of critical evaluation tools
can help ameliorating much suffering in this critical area.
