Meeting - HIV in East Africa: Challenges Faced by Health Care Workers

HIV/AIDS in East Africa: Addressing Legal, Ethical, and Human Rights
Challenges Faced by Health Care Workers on the Frontlines.
Meeting II: Research Ethics - The Doctor as a Researcher/Scientist:
Ethical Challenges
Dates: July 17-18th 2003
Location: Nairobi, Kenya
Sponsors: Kenya Medical Research Institute and the Hastings Center for Bioethics
Summary: Many doctors in Africa are involved in collaborative biomedical
HIV/AIDS research projects with researchers from other countries.
Biomedical research in developing countries raises many difficult ethical
issues: For example, what kind of informed consent process is ethically
required in a developing country context? What standard of care should be
provided to research subjects in the control arm of a randomized clinical
trial? What duty (if any) do those who conduct/sponsor the research have
to the research subjects after the conclusion of the trial? In developing
countries, doctors generally cannot simply focus on carrying out their
research and ignore the issue of providing clinical care; how should they
manage the multiple, sometimes conflicting roles they must play?
The project meeting will explore these issues and others that arise in the
context of HIV/AIDS research in the East African setting; bringing the
experiences and perspectives of East African doctors to the fore.
Target Audience: Doctors, health care workers, medical researchers and
policy makers in East Africa
Charges: No registration fees (limited spaces)
