1. Dr C Thangsing, New Delhi
The home based care for people living with HIV/AIDS started in 1995 in Lamka Town,
Churachandpur Manipur by SHALOM; probably the first in the country. Manipur has been one
of the epicenter for HIV in India. The HBC programs were a boon to the people and PLWHAs,
there are intial hiccups but the efforts proved to be a great succes in providing care and
support, reduction of stigma and Discrimination and of course most importantly extending
and prolonging life of PLWHAs.
PCI works in Maharashtra and Tamilnadu with funding from CDC to provide Homebased care for
people living with HIV/AIDS which was aptly named PATHWAY, Positive action for the health
of people living with HIV/AIDS. It has already cater services to over 300 patients in Pune
in Maharashtra and Salem in Tamilnadu.

3. Chanda Fikansa Simon, Zambia.
In response to the request of an example of Home Care for people with HIV/AIDS,I wish to
inform you of a programme in Zambia called The Integrated AIDS Programme for the Catholic
Diocese of Ndola in Northern Part of Zambia which is one of the examples for a community
based home based care Programme.
It started in 1993 officially though it was in existence informally before then. It has
over 8,000 chronically ill patients of which over 95% are HIV symptomatically positive. It
has over 700 trained Community volunteers and over 35 qualified nurses. It has a coverage
of about 73%.
I worked for that programme for the past 4 years until December 2002. If specific is
required about the programme, I will be too glad to provide this.
