ICASA : Pre conference discussions: AF-AIDS & SEA-AIDS
- ProCAARE Moderation Team.

Dear ProCAARE members
We would like to inform you that the AF-AIDS forum is holding a pre-conference discussion
leading to the upcoming 13th International Conference for AIDS and Sexually Transmitted
Diseases in Africa (ICASA), Nairobi, September 21 -26.
The first of four topics for discussion "Challenges to scaling up antiretroviral treatment
in Africa" is closed. We are launching the second discussion focusing on comprehensive
HIV/AIDS care this week , "We want access to care... but what care?" The issues
surrounding the topic underpin the theme of the forthcoming ICASA conference. ProCAARE
members are cordially invited to participate and contribute with experiences.
There are two key questions to start the discussion:
"Has the focus on increasing access to ARV treatment diverted our attention from improving
other HIV/AIDS-related care services that would improve the health and well-being of
people living with HIV, and that might also be essential for the successful expansion of
ARV access?
"What do you see happening in your country or community? Is the need for basic care
services and infrastructure 'losing ground' compared to ongoing campaigns and focus on
achieving universal access to ARVs?"
We also would like to inform you that during the same period a similar debate will be held
on the SEA-AIDS forum.
These two parallel discussions will allow us to obtain a broader picture and compare the
needs and the actual debate around care in the two regions most affected by HIV/AIDS in
the world, Africa and South-East Asia. The summaries of both discussions will be posted
on their respective forums and also cross-posted to ProCAARE as part of the launch of the
discussions leading the 6th. Home and Community Care Conference (HCC), Dakar, December
8/11.
