Dear Friends,

Hello and many thanks for the terrific information about home-based care for people living
with HIV/AIDS. I would like to add another program, namely, that of KAIPPG (Kenya AIDS
Intervention/Prevention Project Group) in Mumias, W. Kenya.

In our program, which helps about 200 home-based clients, our nurses and community workers
visit patients in their homes, providing drugs when available, emotional and other
supports, food, and sometimes stipends. Lack of transport limits our ability to travel
great distances through the rural areas, but we are working on that now, and expect to
help many more people in future. The visits we do provide help to ease the isolation as
well as increase the care for those struggling with HIV/AIDS, and are intended to help
families and friends cope better as well.

Our clients regularly express the importance to them of these visits, not only to their
survival and to ease their immediate needs but also to help their loved ones. Some clients
have told us that the caring and support provided has given them the courage to
reintegrate into their communities, and this in turn has been shown to have a positive
effect on a person's quality of life, in addition to prolonging it. Communities maintain
more cohesiveness in this way as well, as stigma and discrimination are reduced.

We hope to expand our program to meet the obvious and increasing need, and we look forward
to hearing about others and sharing experiences and best practices.

With many thanks and all best wishes,

Janet Feldman
