1. CONFERENCE PROGRAMME:

The Conference programme:
The content is based on the abstracts received. It was intended to offer an extensive
vision of home and community care from various perspectives.

The spotlight will be placed on a single topic each day:

* Day 1, December 9: Better care: The role of the community and PLHAs in scaling-up care
and treatment, monitoring and evaluation of community care programs, palliative care,
caregivers, taking care of children.
* Day 2, December 10: Better living: Human rights, stigma and discrimination, involving
family and community in the continuum of care.
* Day 3, December 11: Development /Leadership: The involvement of PLHAs and community
members in policy development, scaling-up community programmes, income generating
activities, developing supportive environments and partnerships.

Conference format:
A participatory and interactive conference structure is envisaged.

Plenary session with 3 or 4 key speakers
* 6 Parallel Round Tables. Where the debate with the audience will be as important as the
speakers' presentations.
* 6 Parallel Community discussions. This is a very innovative approach, which intends to
facilitate the community debate around hot topics.
* 6 Parallel Skills Building sessions
* 4 to 7 Parallel Symposiums and satellite meetings.

The Conference program will soon be available online.

2. MARATHON MEETING

The International Steering Committee and the International Scientific Committee met in
Dakar for the Marathon Meeting in October.

The discussions were focused on core issues surrounding the community's response to the
HIV/AIDS in order to move the agenda forward. A geographical balance was sought in terms
of abstracts so as ensure inclusion of lessons learned and challenges experienced
throughout the world.

The HCC Secretariat would like to thank all those who participated in the Marathon
Meeting. Participant's put in long hours of hard work, the benefits of which will be seen
at the upcoming conference.

3. ABSTRACTS RECEIVED

501 abstracts received, with the following geographical distribution:

Africa: 79%
Asia: 11,3%
Europe: 5%
America: 4,6%

Approximately 70% of the abstracts have been accepted and will be included in the
Conference programme.

The HCC Secretariat would like to thank all those who submitted abstracts. The quality was
excellent.

4. ACTIVITIES PRE-CONFERENCE

An interesting series of activities will take place in Dakar just before the Conference:

* 2-6 December: Thematic workshops of African Network 2000/AIDS International
* 5-6 December: Meeting of African jurists working on HIV/AIDS texts
* 7 December: Official launch of the Bush Initiative for Africa. Organized by USAID/White
house
* 6-7 December: Meeting on Sex-Work. Organized by the Inter-country Team, UNAIDS
* 7 December: March against stigma and discrimination organized by SWAA

5. CONFERENCE REGISTRATION
To date an excess of 1,000 registrations have been received!!!! Further registrations are
welcome. Visit our website for more information.

* Local Participants $250
* Accompanying Persons $150

6. SCHOLARSHIP PROCESS

Scholarship applications are currently being screened. Details of the process will soon be
posted.

7. VISA ISSUES

Assistance will be provided with visas on arrival in Dakar.
P.S. Delegates traveling in transit from the United States, require a Senegalese visa.

8. COMMUNITY PROGRAM UPDATE

- PLHAs Lounge: During the Conference, delegates who are living with HIV/AIDS will be
given access to a comfortable resting place.

- Community Village: A group of community organizations will display their work.

9. EXHIBITORS STAND

The deadline is 15th November 2003. The space available is very limited, so submit your
application as soon as possible if you wish to secure the space.

10. PALLIATIVE DISCUSSION ON HCC/ProCAARE FORUM

Palliative care is being discussed on the HCC/ProCAARE pre-Conference forum. Community
preparedness for HCC will also be discussed. Hope you will join the discussion!!!(See
below for instructions)
