Dear colleagues in the AIDS-sector,
earlier this month we launched in Windhoek (Namibia) a new publication together with the
Minister of Health and Social Services. In the book we brought together some 50 essays
from young adults and drawings from children on the topic ?AIDS in my community?.
Background:
An analysis of present mass-media prevention campaigns shows, that most messages are
reduced to technical aspects of prevention. No expression of social or emotional relations
is found. Sexuality is only regarded as a technical process: the connection between sexual
intercourse and social relations is neglected. No attention is paid to the social
environment in which HIV- transmission occurs and there is no debate about the social
dimensions of AIDS - the emotional and over-individual dramas in families, relationships
and friendships.
The book:
The edition of the essays and drawings provides a comprehensive look at the personal
experiences and the social and collective wounds and pain caused by AIDS. Important and
new dimensions in the debate on HIV/AIDS are opened, exceeding technical aspects and
targeting relationships. The uncensored insight into the view of young people helps
hopefully to stimulate a broad and personal debate about HIV/AIDS, and the consequences in
the daily lives of families and communities.
The book is available through Gamsberg Macmillan Publishers Windhoek, Namibia :
