Hi there

I'm a med-student from Tanzania, East Africa.

Here the following is part of the essential health care for the prenatal periods.

*early booking for ante natal clinics
*health education on preventions of STDs and self hygiene promotion
*VCT for volunteered counselling and testing for HIV
*screening for syphilis, anaemia, UTI, diabetes, HT
*educating mothers on risk of transmission on HIV, risk factors, prevention methods available
*all preventive measurements for preventive problems such as malaria (Tanzania is in endemics area for malaria) and anaemia
*breast feeding options for HIV+ve mothers
*provision of prophylactic single dose of ARV for pregnant HIV+ve mothers to take during the onset of labour, and infant born to this mother is also given Nevirapine drops to prevent MTCT whether the delivery mode being Spontaneous vaginal delivery or C/S.
*education on danger/emergency signs during which they should rush to the nearest hospital.
*early detection and treatment of any infections during pregnancy

The following are the appropriate obstetric care to b provided, by the national guidelines for HIV in Tanzania 2002:

~avoiding invasive procedures during ante natal periods and during labour
~avoiding external cephalic version
~delaying the artificial rupture of membranes until 7-8cm dilatation
~avoiding routine episiotomies
~minimizing traumatic instrument delivery
~caesarean section where feasible
