Research Council in Pretoria, South Africa has become the new host to
the Secretariat of the SVRI. We are extremely pleased to be able to do
this and very much look forward to the coming period of work with the
SVRI. In order to establish the Secretariat in Pretoria we need to
employ a Project Officer. We are currently advertising the post and very
much welcome applicants from interested individuals. The position will
be based on Pretoria and the successful applicant will become an
employee of the MRC.

PROGRAMME OFFICER FOR THE SEXUAL VIOLENCE RESEARCH INITIATIVE
(Specialist Scientist level, one year contract appointment, Pretoria,
South Africa)
The MRC Gender & Health Research Unit seeks to improve the health status
and quality of life of women through high quality scientific research on
gender and health, informing the development of policy, health services
and health promotion. The Unit is host to the Sexual Violence Research
Initiative (SVRI), which has been established with funding from the
Global Forum for Health Research. The mission of the SVRI is to promote
and disseminate research to reduce and respond to sexual violence in
low- and middle- income countries through identifying gaps, building
capacity, supporting research, raising awareness and building
partnerships.
Description of duties: The incumbent will be the programme officer of
the SVRI and will work under the supervision of the SVRI Secretary, who
is the Director of the Gender & Health Research Unit of the Medical
Research Council of South Africa.
Specific tasks will include:
1. To develop an operational plan to accomplish the yearly goals of the
SVRI and track achievement of aims.
2. To plan, arrange and prepare meetings of the SVRI Co-ordinating
Group, record a summary of the proceedings, and report to the
Co-ordinating Group.
3. To pro-actively update and expand the membership of the SVRI network,
through the identification and assessment of potential new partners in
different countries.
4. To identify opportunities to disseminate information about the
initiative and undertake advocacy, and to promote the exchange of
experiences, information and materials through moderating an e-mail
discussion forum and maintaining an interactive web-site.
5. Undertake fund raising efforts for SVRI research proposals by
creating a development plan, identifying and targeting potential donors
and tracking progress on meeting its funding objectives.
6. Administer the development of SVRI products such as desk reviews and
brochure, and ensure their timely completion, including the
establishment of contracts and budgets, monitoring of timelines, and
fiscal and programmatic monitoring through progress and financial
reports.
7. Oversee the processes of requesting and reviewing research proposals;
administer the award of research grants; monitor work carried out under
such grants and prepare reports on the status and progress of such work.
8. Carry out other related duties as requested by the Secretary.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Education: Masters degree or PhD in health, social science or other
related discipline.
Competencies: Good understanding of research methods and research. Good
general IT skills and familiarity with internet applications. Ability to
communicate well; excellent writing skills (documented through
publications and work samples). Ability to work well with people from
diverse cultures. Initiative, drive and enthusiasm.
Experience: Very good knowledge of and minimum five years
research/programmatic experience in the field of public health
preferably with focus on violence and/or gender issues, ideally acquired
working with/in developing countries. Advocacy experience would be a
strong asset . At least three years' experience in project management.
Ability to run projects with minimum guidance. Experience in developing
funding proposals and raising funds.
Languages:Excellent English. Knowledge of one or more official
languages of the United Nations would be an advantage.
The MRC offers a total cost of employment remuneration package of R 246
834 - R 265 784 that includes the organisation's contributions to fringe
