National Abstinence Leadership Workshop 2006

********************

Dear Friend,

Sexual transmission accounts for 85-90% of HIV infections in Nigeria . Young people aged 12 to 25 have the highest infection rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including HIV/AIDS. Every year more than 1,000,000 Nigerian youngsters acquire an STI. Behind these figures are shattered lives and broken promises. There is urgent need for sustained education and witnessing, one that guides youth to make healthy and Godly choices concerning their sexuality.

The Abstinence Message! Abstinence education teaches adolescents and singles about the many benefits of saving sex until marriage. Lessons learned from Uganda show that behaviour change in favour of abstinence, partner reduction and marital fidelity is effective in rolling back infection rates.

Abstinence education:
* helps develop sound character and high self-esteem among youth
* eliminates the difficulties, diseases and deaths that often result from premarital sex. * safeguards against risky behaviours (alcohol, drugs, violence, cultism, etc.).
* fosters successful marriage and family life
* Promotes parent-child communication and bonding.
