Celebrating ProCAARE's Tenth Anniversary
******************
Dear colleagues,
ProCAARE was formally launched at the International AIDS Conference in Vancouver in 1996, ten years ago!
To recognize this tenth anniversary, we would like to do a short retrospective of ProCAARE ? our growth and our loyal subscribers, how you are using the messages in your work, and highlight key issues covered, then in 1996 and now in 2006.
Our subscribers
In 1996, ProCAARE subscribers numbered 148 in 24 countries. Today, we enjoy a membership of over 1600 in 79 countries with almost half of you coming from low and middle income countries. Since many of you use .com addresses, we are not able to track the countries in which you live and/or work.
In a survey conducted in May 2004, you told us who you are, where you work and how you use the messages distributed in ProCAARE:
--Clinical and public health doctors, nurses, social scientists/workers, program/project personnel, health consultants, journalists, researchers, psychologists, and educators.
--In national and local AIDS organizations, hospitals, universities, medical schools, Ministries of Health, journal publishers, research institutions, international NGOs, UN, UNICEF, WHO, ARC
--In program development, teaching, hospital and community work, current awareness, training, research, pursuing educational opportunities from announcements, networking with colleagues around the world, sharing information with others
We have selected two topics for review from the ProCAARE archives, HIV and TB co-infection and Home Care and Home Care training, and compiled some resources that we hope will be useful to you.
HIV/TB
In February 96, there was a message showing a marked increase in mortality in the HIV-infected patient with TB. Ten years later, the devastating impact of the co-infection is clear. See message http://www.procaare.org/archive/procaare/199602/msg00004.php
We knew the relationship in 1996, yet in 2006 have still have not done well in integrating the two. Please see our ProCAARE web site http://www.procaare.org/documents.php for a list of free HIV/TB co-infection resources.

Home Care and Home Care Training Materials
In January 1997 there was a message identifying the need for home care and a request for materials that could be used to train family members in caring for patients. See message

Over the last ten years, ProCAARE has covered several excellent conferences in Africa on home care and now there are several excellent training materials and programs. Please see our ProCAARE web site http://www.procaare.org/documents.php for a list of free home care and home care training resources.
